Back to Sound
There are an estimated 800,000 hearing impaired children under 7 years of age in China, with less than 5% having the opportunity to obtain a hearing aid. Many of these children face social stigmas despite their abilities to learn and develop as a normal child would if not for their hearing disability.
With a history of helping children in need through medical and education programs, Operation Blessing China is in 2007 focusing its assistance programs to help hearing impaired children in China. The Back to Sound program launched by Operation Blessing China’s corporate partner, Nokia, alongside with Modern Sky Digital Entertainment Ltd, MTV, SinaNet plus a medley of well-known performing artists, will put a spotlight on the needs of these hearing impaired children.
Back to Sound envisages releasing certain hearing impaired children from their world of silence and social stigma through:
- Providing hearing impaired children in poverty with the opportunity to regain some level of hearing through high quality hearing aids
- Receiving speech rehabilitation and training, and
- The opportunity for some to continue on to attend school and ultimately to lead an independent, normal life
Operation Blessing China through cooperation with China Rehabilitation and Research Centre for Deaf Children will implement this program in China. The program will also include providing further training for speech therapists and teachers who work with deaf children and also the parents of deaf children. Special education options for children unable to have their hearing improved through a hearing aid will also be provided.

20th April, 2007, Nokia launched the campaign “Let Music Express Love” at 706 Space alongside with artists and companies from the music industry. For those involved in this campaign, music is their first passion and children living in a world without sound hold a special place in their hearts. The opportunity to play a part in a program that benefits hearing impaired children is hugely significant to many in China’s music industry.
